Description: Floating kelp is a type of brown algae that forms extensive canopies on the water's surface. Species include Bull Kelp (Nereocystis luetkeana) and Giant Kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera). Floating kelp canopies are mapped along the Outer Coast and Strait of Juan de Fuca using aerial photography annually in late summer as part of a long term monitoring effort. Available data include: annual surveys, a combined map of kelp occurrence (1989-2014, excluding 1993), and a spatial index delineating the geographic extent of monitoring sub-areas (Map Index). Information and data download are available at: http://www.dnr.wa.gov/programs-and-services/aquatics/aquatic-science/kelp-monitoring
